Our Governing Body

Welcome to our Governors’ section

Every school has a Governing Body. The Education (No 2) Act, 1986, states that from 16th September 2013 the Governing Body will consist of 2 Parent Governors, 1 Staff Governor, 1 Headteacher and 4 Co-Opted Governors.

Briefly the Governors’ duties are:

  • To see that each school is conducted in accordance with the Education Acts.
  • Finance - as it affects the needs of the school
  • To see that the premises are kept in a good state of repair and to direct how the premises might be used out of school hours.
  • To assist in the appointment of all staff in the school.
  • To exercise general responsibility for the welfare of the school.
  • Governors have always had responsibilities regarding the School’s Curriculum, but with the introduction of the National Curriculum, their duties in this area have been clearly defined.
  • Full Governors’ meetings are held six times a year.
  • If you wish to contact the Governors for any reason, you may do so direct or through the Clerk to Governors, via the School Office on 365411.

Meet our Governors

Julie Cook

Chair of Governors

My previous experience of being a Governor was several years ago when my own children were younger. I have been a Governor at Victoria Road since June 2016. In a past life I was a Business Manager for Plymouth City Council and am now employed as an Executive Assistant for a local IT firm, Delt Shared Services.

I have lived in Plymouth since a young age and live in the west of the city.

Alexandro Basso

Co-opted Governor

I have recently joined the Board of Governors at Victoria Road Primary School. I am a graduate of King’s College London (1st Class Hons, Chemistry BSc) and currently work as nuclear safety engineer at Babcock. My extensive tutoring experience and passion for education attracted me to the role of a school Governor, where I hope to bring a fresh perspective to the challenges faced. I'm a deep believer of an education which goes beyond just the academic and which is fundamental to a child’s growth, acting as a springboard to help them fulfil their potential. I believe the ethos at Horizon Multi Academy Trust and Victoria Road Primary School seeks to do this, and I'm excited to help support them in achieving their goals as best I can.

Mike Bate

Parent Governor

My daughter attends the school and I joined the Governing Board in May and I have taken on the role as one of the designated safeguarding leads. In my day to day life I support victims of crime and I do Indirect work with Children and Young People. I also volunteer as a Scout Leader and I'm in charge of running a very successful scout troop and I've been a leader for over 13 years. I'm also a Health and Safety and Safeguarding Lead for a local supported child contact centre for separated families etc and I've been doing this for 12 years. I am currently doing Diplomas in Mental Health and Wellbeing  and First Aid.

Co-opted Governor

Wendy Haymes

I am a retired Civil Servant having worked for 25 years with the DWP and have a 23 year old daughter.  I have lived in Plymouth since 1981.  My areas of experience in are communication and training.  Currently, I work part time for a Community Centre close to where I live.  I am also a Parish Councillor. I have no previous school governing experience but I passionately believe that all children have the right to the best education available.  The team at Victoria Road Primary School work tirelessly for their pupils and I hope I can be of some assistance to them them in achieving their vision for the school.
