Fictional Recount Letter

To start our English learning in year 4 we will be writing our own Fictional Recount Letters using 'Boy' by Roald Dahl. We will be recapping the key grammatical features from year 3 as well as developing our ability to use fronted adverbials and interesting vocabulary.


Information Text

Our second unit will be all about writing an information text based on the style of Ben Hoare's book, An Anthology of Intriguing Animals. We will be looing at the key features of information texts and how we can lay out our writing to interest the reader.

Guided Reading 

In our guided reading sessions, all of the children will read a range of extended texts whilst answering questions using the following reading skills:

  1. Vocabulary understanding.
  2. Inference
  3. Predicting
  4. Retrieval
  5. Summarising
  6. Commentating on the text.
  7. Understand the author.


Please when reading at home explore these questions and skills with them. Ask them what 'Reading Dog' we are working on each week.

Independent Reading



Every day the children are given the opportunity to read their current Accelerated Reading book. This book is chosen from the school library according to your child's ZPD level. Once the children are confident they have read the book they can take a quiz using the link below. This will test the children on what they have read and give them a pass percentage. Children are expected to achieve a pass rate of 70% or higher. If they don't achieve this they can re-read the book and try the quiz again.
